Summary: | Mahmud Yunus is a distinguished expert in Quranic studies and interpretation. One of his significant contributions is translating the meaning of the Quran into Malay, known as Tafsir al-Quran Nul Karim Rasm Uthmani. This work has become a primary reference for the Malay world, including Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei. Most previous studies on this scholar and his work have highlighted his prominence and the exegetical methods he employed in interpreting Quranic verses. However, research that examines Mahmud Yunus' translation approach from the perspective of modern Western translation theories remains exceedingly rare. Therefore, this study aims to explore the translation approach employed by Mahmud Yunus by utilising one of the explicitation strategies, namely lexical specification, as proposed by Klaudy and Károly in 2005, who view explicitation as a translation strategy that can reveal the implicit meaning present in the source language into the target language due to contextual factors. This study's primary focus is on using the rhetorical device majāz mursal (synecdoche) exclusively. This study adopts a qualitative approach and utilises purposive sampling methods. The data comprises verses 36 from Surah Yusuf, verse 31 from Surah al-A’rāf, verse 2 from Surah Yunus, verse 50 from Surah Maryam, verse 84 from Surah al-Syu’arā’, verse 40 from Surah Tāhā, verse 13 from Surah al-Qaṣaṣ, verse 7 from Surah Nuh, and verse 6 from Surah al-Māidah. The study reveals that Mahmud Yunus plays a crucial role in conveying the implicit meanings inherent in the style of the Quranic majāz mursal by employing the strategy of explicitness through lexical specification. By utilising this explicitation approach, it can be seen that Mahmud Yunus strives to preserve the implicit meanings found in the source language (Arabic) to align with its inherent rhetorical nuances. |
