Summary:Music has the power to affect emotions, wellbeing, and behaviour and has been used and researched extensively in medicine and therapy. Music in coaching, however, needs more research. This qualitative study explores how the coach and client experience a coaching session when listening to music preselected by the client before the session. Semi-structured interviews were conducted and analysed using interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) methodology. Findings indicated that clients considered music selection challenging, it strengthened their connection with the coach, that different responses can be experienced, and that, left with the choice of how to use music, coaches’ approaches varied
