description Innovation projects present us with complex challenges. But is it possible to better understand the profound nature of a problem’s complexity? And can we then use this understanding to accelerate the development of solutions, thereby pushing back scientific and technical boundaries? The analysis of what a scientific paradigm is, as a structure that facilitates exchanges between scientists but also as an “imposed” normative framework, allows us to imagine other ways of interpreting existing information once we agree to step outside this framework. The resulting complexity descriptors are invaluable for analyzing difficult problems and revealing surprising structural analogies, even between heterogeneous scientific fields. The Solar Impulse project, rich in scientific and technical challenges, illustrated a concrete application of this approach and the way it can help us think about complex problems.
