Description
Summary:This paper interrogates how a crime early warning system could prevent the abduction of school children in Nigeria. This is essential for interrogation, as the abduction of school children has become a threat to national security. The paper used qualitative data from secondary literature and conceptualized theories of early warning signs to provide a theoretical base for its argument. The paper revealed that the abduction of school children in Nigeria could have been prevented with intelligence gathering and applying of crime prevention mechanism through early warning signs. It argued that an early warning system is designed for the identification of crime chronic hot spots or/ and temporary hot spot. This paper has established abduction of school children in Nigeria is a threat to national security. And it is preventable with the aid of Early Warning System which it could be temporary hot, hot spots or chronic hot spot. The combined hot spot program first allocates resources to chronic hot spots up to a maximum size in the area and then applies the EWS to remaining areas outside of the chronic hotspots, optimizing over grid sizes and rule thresholds. This submission differs from previous studies, which mostly and primarily advocated for the use of chronic hot spots for crime prevention. But this paper is of the view that a combination of temporary spots, hot spots and chronic hot spots essential recipes for intelligence gathering in the prevention of abduction of school children in Nigeria.
