description   This article aims to examine both the use of artificial intelligence tools in the practice of document indexing by documentalists and librarians working in the central libraries of Senegalese public universities—particularly those in document processing services—and their perceptions of the impact of these tools on this practice. The study is based on a quantitative methodology, using a questionnaire as the data collection tool. Out of a total of 76 professionals, a sample of 20 specifically working in the aforementioned services was selected. The findings reveal that none of the surveyed professionals currently use artificial intelligence (AI) tools for indexing. Most of them are reluctant to use these tools in document indexing due to fears of being replaced by such technologies. As a result, the perceptions or opinions of the surveyed information professionals are mixed. Some believe that the future of indexing will be promising with AI tools, while others, conversely, feel a strong sense of anxiety. Keywords: automation; documentary indexing; artificial intelligence; university libraries; Senegal
