Summary:Most comprehensive simulations of population dynamics use origin-fixation approaches to modeling mutations, specifically modeling mutation using the framework of the modern synthesis. However, modern advances in understanding mutations have brought into focus new modalities of mutation that do not fully align with this vision of population dynamics. These other modes of mutation, such as cyclical mutation, have not so far been represented in models of population dynamics despite representing a significant fraction of mutations that occur in vivo. Problematic results of current attempts to create total models of population dynamics may be due to this incompleteness. In addition, we will present how a cyclical mutation modality can be modeled in population dynamics and how this can, at least partially, resolve problematic long-term trends predicted by current comprehensive simulations.
