Summary:Abstract This research performs linear static numerical analysis of top surface erodible embankment to evaluate variations of vertical displacements and stresses for variable wheel loads (0, 50, 100, 150, and 200 kPa) and erodible depths (0, 100, 200, and 300 mm). The erodible depths have been measured from the field investigation at Jumarbari-Saghata road embankment at Gaibandha in Bangladesh. The range of difference in settlements between previous centrifuge and present studies is found to be (1.9–18.2) %, which may indicate a good accuracy of the numerical analysis in this research. The maximum vertical deflection decremental rates for 100, 200, and 300 mm thicknesses of erodibility are obtained to be 2.1%, 4.3%, and 6.4%, respectively. Similarly, the rates of the maximum decremental stresses for erodible thicknesses of 100, 200, and 300 mm are found to be 16.7%, 25%, and 16.7%, respectively. The decremental ranges of vertical displacements and stresses are found to be (2.1–6.4) % and (0–4) %, respectively, for the wheel load of 200 kPa based on the numerical analysis results. Therefore, the professional engineers can be benefited from this research to easy obtain vertical deflection and stress rates for corresponding erodible thicknesses.
