Description
Summary:This study evaluated the physical and chemical water quality parameters of River Rwizi in Mbarara City, comparing the results with international water quality standards. Water samples were collected from upstream, midstream, and downstream sections of the river to capture spatial variations in quality. Key parameters analyzed included temperature, turbidity, total suspended solids (TSS), pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), and electrical conductivity. Both in situ measurements and laboratory analyses were employed to assess water quality. The findings revealed notable spatial disparities, with downstream areas showing elevated pollution levels. Several parameters exceeded the permissible limits of international standards, highlighting potential risks to human health and aquatic ecosystems. The study concluded that River Rwizi's water quality is deteriorating due to pollution from agricultural runoff, industrial waste, and domestic activities. To address this, recommendations included implementing pollution control measures, establishing regular water quality monitoring programs, enhancing public awareness, and strengthening the regulatory framework to safeguard the river and its users.
