description This research focused on the challenges faced by refugees in Kanungu District, specifically at the Matanda campsite. The study was guided by three key objectives: to investigate the socioeconomic challenges experienced by refugees, identify their political challenges, and explore the environmental challenges affecting them in the district. A descriptive survey design was adopted as it is suitable for describing group characteristics, estimating proportions, and making predictions. Using the Krejcie and Morgan table (1970), a sample size of 92 respondents was determined from a population of 120. The sample included 10 employees of the Matanda campsite, 7 local leaders from surrounding villages, and 75 refugee leaders. Questionnaires were administered to employees and local leaders, while interviews were conducted with the refugee leaders. The study employed simple random sampling to select general respondents, while purposive sampling was used for key informants, such as local council leaders and employees of the refugee resettlement area. Data collection methods included questionnaires, interviews, and focus group discussions. Qualitative data were analyzed by editing and reorganizing responses into concise, meaningful sentences, presented as quotations to complement quantitative findings. Descriptive statistics such as frequencies and percentages were calculated and presented in tables to enhance clarity. Key findings indicated that 17% of respondents cited lack of access to information as a significant challenge for refugees, while 16% highlighted difficulties in proving legal identity due to the absence of birth certificates or national ID cards. The study recommended assessing the environmental conditions before the arrival of refugees to identify, quantify, and prioritize the most degraded areas for rehabilitation and support.
