description The study examined the impact of child abuse on the academic performance of pupils in Kayonza Sub-county, Kanungu District. It was guided by three main objectives: identifying the different forms of child abuse in the area, analyzing the causes of child abuse, and assessing its effects on the academic performance of primary school children. The researcher employed a descriptive-analytical approach and a cross-sectional survey design, utilizing questionnaires and interview guides to collect accurate information on respondents' facts, opinions, and perceptions regarding child abuse and its academic implications. The study targeted headteachers, teachers, and pupils, allowing data collection on multiple objectives simultaneously. Data collection tools included interviews and questionnaires. Quantitative data from the questionnaires was sorted, coded, edited, and categorized according to the study objectives, with results summarized into frequency tables and percentages for easier interpretation. Qualitative data was analyzed to capture respondents' stories and experiences related to the research questions. The findings highlighted various forms of child abuse prevalent in Kayonza Sub-county, including physical abuse, emotional abuse, sexual abuse, neglect, and exploitation. Physical abuse involves inflicting harm through actions like hitting, kicking, or burning, while emotional abuse encompasses behaviors damaging to a child’s self-esteem or emotional health, such as constant criticism or threats. The study recommended implementing comprehensive community awareness campaigns to address the identified forms of child abuse. These initiatives should include workshops, seminars, and educational programs targeting parents, teachers, and community members, aimed at raising awareness about physical abuse, emotional abuse, sexual abuse, neglect, and exploitation.
