description | This study explored the intersection of women empowerment programs and violence against men within Bushenyi District, Uganda. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, the research employs both descriptive survey and exploratory case study designs to gain a comprehensive understanding of the impact of women empowerment initiatives on men’s experiences and perceptions. The quantitative component involved structured surveys administered to 100 male respondents, while the qualitative component included semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions.
The study aimed to investigate four main aspects: the demographic characteristics of respondents, their attitudes towards women empowerment programs, their experiences of violence, and their perceptions of gender roles. Key findings indicate that while women empowerment programs are generally perceived positively in terms of their impact on women, there are nuanced views regarding their effects on men and their experiences of violence. The research found that men’s experiences of violence are varied and influenced by traditional gender roles, with significant implications for support systems and community responses.
The study contributes to the broader understanding of gender dynamics and the unintended consequences of empowerment programs. It highlights the need for more inclusive approaches that consider the experiences of all genders and suggests practical recommendations for policymakers and community leaders. Limitations of the study include potential self-reporting bias and the contextual specificity of Bushenyi District. Future research is recommended to explore these themes in different settings and with larger, more diverse samples.
The findings offer valuable insights for enhancing the effectiveness of women empowerment programs and addressing violence against men, ultimately contributing to more equitable gender relations and improved support systems. |
