Description
Summary:The study was on the impact of climate variability on coffee production in Kambuga sub-county Kanungu district. The study was guided by the following objectives to investigate the climatic factors that have affected coffee production in Kambuga sub-county, Kanungu district, to evaluate the impact of climate variability on Coffee Production in Kambuga sub-county, Kanungu district, to propose practical adaptation strategies to mitigate the negative impacts of climate variability on coffee production in Kambuga sub-county, Kanungu district. The study employed a cross-sectional research design which used both qualitative and quantitative approaches. The study used purposive sampling to select the sub-county chief and parish chief, household heads were selected using a simple random technique thus making a total of 99 respondents. The findings showed that climatic factors that have affected coffee production in Kambuga sub-county, Kanungu district include; Temperature, Rainfall Patterns, Pests and Diseases, Rainfall, Humidity, and Climate Extremes. The study revealed the impact of climate variability on Coffee Production in Kambuga sub-county, Kanungu district, and these include; climate change as a reason for the rapid spread of leaf rust, hotter temperatures have caused plants to lose several growing days in their usual harvest cycle, coffee plants need a terrain with rich soil, rainfall and temperature changes are likely to reduce yields of desirable crops, temperature increases may cause changes in runoff and groundwater recharge rates. The study showed the practical adaptation strategies to mitigate the negative impacts of climate variability on coffee production in Kambuga sub-county, Kanungu district as they include; shade Management, water management, soil health management, crop diversification, pest and disease management. The researcher recommends that the government should strengthen agricultural extension services to provide technical support and training on climate-smart agriculture practices. These extension services can help farmers adopt new technologies and practices to cope with climate variability.
