| description | The study assessed reasons for poor performance in English at the end of senior four examinations among selected schools in Kambuga Town Council Kanungu district. The objectives of the study were: to identify the English language learning facilities that may contribute to senior four students’ good performance, to determine the effectiveness of teachers in teaching the English language, and to assess the attitude of senior four students towards the English language among selected secondary schools in Kambuga Town Council Kanungu district. A descriptive research design was used and data was collected using questionnaires. The study results revealed that most students do not visit the library for further research and personal reading. They also do not have adequate access to the computer laboratory because most schools allow most computer laboratory usage to students who offer computer studies and not English language. In addition, most of the learners lack an English-speaking and practicing culture which greatly affects how they perform in their exams. It was concluded that several factors such as inadequacy of instructional materials, absenteeism, and lack of appraisal of teachers greatly contributed to the poor performance of students in English language examinations at the end of the senior four exams. The study recommended that the government with the relevant educational stakeholders should put in place appropriate mechanisms and measures that are tailored towards availing enough salary for English language teachers which will motivate teachers as one teacher said “if the teacher is happy, the learners can pass exams.” |
