description | In Kisoro District, a large portion of the area is marked by underdeveloped and disadvantaged settlements, yet cultural tourism offers opportunities for some individuals to benefit. This research aimed to explore the potential of cultural tourism as a driver of community development in southwestern Uganda's Kisoro District. The study focused on identifying and cataloging cultural tourism resources, assessing residents' attitudes and perceptions toward cultural tourism development, and evaluating the economic impact of cultural tourism on the district. A cross-sectional research design using a mixed-methods approach was applied, with participants selected through a combination of purposive and simple random sampling. Data were collected through questionnaires, in-depth interviews with key informants, and observational techniques. The findings identified a variety of cultural tourism resources, such as cultural values and lifestyles, architectural landmarks, museums, theatres, indigenous communities, art crafts (20%), cultural differences (18%), local resistance (12%), and conflicts arising from interactions between locals and tourists (13%). To maximize the economic benefits of cultural tourism in Kisoro District, it is crucial to involve local communities in decision-making and consult them on policies regarding cultural tourism resources, ensuring they have a voice in shaping these decisions. |
