Summary: | This study investigated the level of iron in river Rwabakazi along different water points from the source of its tributaries around Kyase iron factory to Kabale town. Five points were selected and water samples were taken for analysis using redox titration of iron ions and potassium permanganate. Iron ions were first reduced to iron (ii) ions by ascorbic acid before titration with manganate ions according to the equation MnO-4(aq)+8H+(aq)+5Fe2+(aq) Mn2+(aq)+5Fe3+(aq)+4H2O (l). The results showed that iron concentration in river Rwabakazi was higher about 500 times near the factory and 70 times near Kabale town compared to (0.1-10 mg/l) iron concentration in river water according to WHO. The recommended iron concentration in river water is 0.1-10 mg/l, 0.1-50 mg/l in groundwater, 0.01-0.1 mg/l in seawater, and 0.3-0.5 mg/l in drinking water according to WHO, EP, EPA, and IWBA. Thus the iron concentration in River Rwabakazi was found to be averagely higher than the recommended limit. It is therefore recommended that the waters of river Rwabakazi are not safe for both human and animal use. |
